The most important photographers in Maui are still making the most amazing pictures in Mauis world, but there’s a new crop of talented and dedicated professionals who have been doing just that for decades.
They’ve been doing it for years, but now, with the emergence of the new crop, a new wave of talent is on the rise.
With more photographers entering the industry, and with the industry growing at an ever-increasing rate, Maui is poised to be the next destination for photojournalism.
A handful of these new photographers are already making a name for themselves on the island.
The most successful photographers in the state of Maui?
The first to hit the scene was Maui photographer Paul McNeil, who was just 18 years old when he started working in Mauicos photography scene.
He’s still the youngest photographer in the business today, and he’s just the second youngest photographer to be awarded an award.
His debut film, Mauis Last Words, was released in 2016 and won two prestigious photographic awards from the Mauican Society of Photography, the Mauis Society of Contemporary Photography and the Mauian Society of Photographers and Filmmakers.
In addition to his work with Mauicas last words, McNeil is also a member of the Mauician Society for Photography.
“Maui is my home and I love being there every day,” he told Newsweek.
It’s easy to forget that the photo industry is still in its infancy in the Hawaiian Islands, which is why McNeil and his fellow Mauis photographers are so much more than just photographers.
McNeil said his passion for photography is shared with many of his fellow photographers, and that there’s no place like home.
“It’s a real honor and a real privilege to be able to share that passion with other people, and to help them do what they love,” he said.
“There’s a lot of people that want to be photographers and a lot more people than that that want me to be a photographer.”
With all the young and talented Maui photographers entering this new wave, it’s easy for a generation of Mauis to grow up in the photography world, and McNeil believes this will continue for many years to come.
“There’s no doubt in my mind that I’m going to continue to be here for a very long time,” he explained.
“I’m sure I’m just going to grow into the business and make more and more and make pictures and do the things I love.”
Mauidhuis newest crop of photographers is also making waves in the industry.
Michele Pou, a photographer from Kahala, is one of the most successful and well-respected photojournalists in the country.
Pou has won five national photojournalistic awards and has been awarded multiple awards from several different magazines.
She said that she’s always dreamed of being a photographer and her passion for Maui has grown over the years.
“When I was a little girl I was fascinated by Maui,” she told Newsweek, “and then I got to be there when I was young.
It was an incredible place.”
Pau has been a photographer for 10 years and says she started her career by going to the local market to sell photos of the locals.
“I started taking photos and making a living selling them.
So I did that for a while, and then when I moved to the state, I realized that I wanted to make money.
So now I’m here,” she said.
For Pou the most rewarding part of being in Mauau was learning how to get the most out of the people around her, and she’s worked with both the people in her hometown and the locals to bring that experience to the world.
“You’re dealing with a lot people who are very open-minded and very open to the process, and I think that really helps to keep you moving forward in the right direction,” she explained.
What is the next wave of Mauicists photographers looking to do?
According to Pou and her fellow photographers the most important thing for a new Maui shooter to do is become part of the industry and make some money.
If that means taking on the challenge of becoming a photographer, it doesn’t have to mean doing all the work yourself.
One of the reasons Pou was drawn to the industry was because she loves the outdoors and can’t wait to travel.
She also said she loves being able to work with other Maui’s photographers to get her work published.
So if you want to take a shot with the best Maui photography in the world, it won’t be easy.
As for Pou’s favorite photographer, she says she’d be remiss if she didn’t mention the one she loves to work out of Mauidhui.
