COLUMBIA, S.C. — A new generation of wedding photographers in South Carolina is taking a page from the professional photographers of the 1980s and 1990s, who used to show up in their hometowns for photo shoots.
They’re going to be doing this for a long time.
The South Carolina Association of Photographers says this is the second year it has organized the state’s largest annual photography contest.
In 2018, the association held the National Association of Wedding Photographers (NAWP) competition for the first time in nearly a decade.
More than 200 photographers and photographers’ associations from all over the United States participated, which drew over 400 entries.
NAWPS, the national association of wedding photography, plans to hold another national contest in 2019 for photographers to take their pictures in their home states.
The first contest was held in 2010.
This year’s event, held on June 22 in Columbia, will be the first in the state for a national competition.
Organizers said it was designed to encourage new photographers to go outside their home cities and do what they love.
A total of 5,000 photographers and members of their association will participate in the contest.
